Buying Guides
Choose
the right safe
Step One
What are you protecting?
The starting point for any safe purchase is understanding what you need to protect. Paper documents, digital media, cash, pharmaceuticals and weapons all have different storage requirements — and different compliance obligations. Getting this wrong means buying a product that either underprotects your assets or fails to meet regulatory requirements.
Considerations
Four key considerations
What are you storing?
Documents, data media, cash, Schedule 8 drugs and firearms all have specific product requirements. Some products require certification to meet legal or insurance obligations.
→
What level of security?
Consider your risk environment. A home safe has different requirements to a pharmacy dispensary or a government office. Cash ratings, burglary grades and SCEC endorsement are all relevant depending on your application.
→
Fire protection needed?
If fire is a concern, choose a product with an independent fire rating matched to what you're storing — paper requires different protection to digital media. Don't assume all fire rated products are equal.
→
Where will it be installed?
Size, weight and installation requirements vary significantly. Floor safes, wall safes and freestanding cabinets all have different placement and anchoring requirements. Consider access, floor loading and delivery logistics.
Regulatory Compliance
Some purchases aren't optional.
Certain industries have mandatory storage requirements. Schedule 8 drug storage in pharmacies, hospitals and medical centres must meet state and territory health regulations. Government departments storing classified documents require SCEC endorsed cabinets. Firearms storage must meet police and licensing authority requirements.
